Aesthetic Chills as a Universal Marker of Openness to Experience

چکیده

Aesthetic chills are transient emotional responses to music or other experiences of beauty. Item 188 of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) asks respondents if they have experienced these chills, and in American samples it is one of the best definers of Openness to Experience, one of the five basic personality factors. As part of the NEO-PI-R, the item has been translated into over 40 languages, and an examination of back-translations suggests that the phenomenon can be expressed in all the languages examined. Data from the Personality Profiles of Cultures Project show that Item 188 is one of the best definers of Openness in most of the 51 cultures examined. Aesthetic chills appear to be a universal emotional experience, although the functions they serve and the mechanisms that account for them remain to be discovered. Robert R. McCrae receives royalties from the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R). This research was supported in part by the Intramural Research Program, NIH, National Institute on Aging. I thank the translators and back-translators of the NEO-PI-R for their contributions to this research; my collaborators in the Personality Profiles of Cultures Project for supplying data; and Frank J. Sulloway for information on Darwin’s aesthetic experience. Openness to experience and aesthetic chills: Links to heart rate sympathetic activity

Openness to experience has important links to cognitive processes such as creativity, and to values, such as political attitudes. The biological origins of variation in openness to experience are, however, obscure. The centrality of ‘‘aesthetic chills’’ to high openness suggests that sympathetic nervous system activation may play a role. Here, we tested this using the low-frequency heart rate v...

The Impact of Architectural Space on Aesthetic Response (Case Study Shrine of Imam Reza)

Aesthetic chills have been hinted in the writings of some scholars for about two centuries, as a response which occurs through the five senses and it is accompanied by physical sensations, although not more than four decades have passed since the first scientific studies. This reaction is associated with the experience of goose bump and shiver in the spine and shoulders, or a tingle in the scal...

Knowledge, curiosity, and aesthetic chills

Aesthetic chills appear to be a universal emotional experience (see e.g., McCrae, 2007). In laboratory, th...

Aesthetic Chills: Knowledge-Acquisition, Meaning-Making, and Aesthetic Emotions

This article addresses the relation between aesthetic emotions, knowledge-acquisition, and meaning-making. We briefly review theoretical foundations and present experimental data related to aesthetic chills. These results suggest that aesthetic chills are inhibited by exposing the subject to an incoherent prime prior to the chill-eliciting stimulation and that a meaningful prime makes the aesth...

Aesthetic Emotions and Aesthetic People: Openness Predicts Sensitivity to Novelty in the Experiences of Interest and Pleasure

There is a stable relationship between the Openness/Intellect domain of personality and aesthetic engagement. However, neither of these are simple constructs and while the relationship exists, process based evidence explaining the relationship is still lacking. This research sought to clarify the relationship by evaluating the influence of the Openness and Intellect aspects on several different...
